Call for posters

The Scientific Committee invites doctoral students to submit their proposals for posters to be exhibited during the 3rd International Conference on Governance, Crime and Justice Statistics.

A poster is an excellent opportunity for the researcher to discuss his research project face-to-face with the experts who participate in this conference. The posters should tackle one or more topics of interest of this 3rd International Conference.

Who may participate?

Doctoral students with an interest in learning about opinions and recommendations by experts in the area regarding their research projects. The research project is supposed to be in development and may not have been published yet.

How to participate?

Individuals interested are requested to submit a summary of their research project to be evaluated by the Scientific Committee only and exclusively by means of this web page, using the link "Poster submission" at the bottom of this page.

Which are the topics of interest?

Preference will be given to posters that deal with any of the following topics:

  1. Use of crime, victimization and justice statistics for policy-making
  2. Institutional coordination for the production and dissemination of crime, victimization and justice statistics
  3. Integrated statistical systems of data on crime, victimization and justice
  4. Compilation of statistics on crime and justice of populations at risk
  5. Classifications of crime statistics: National and international experiences
  6. Methodologies for measuring transnational crime: Organized crime, cybercrime, human trafficking, migrant smuggling, illicit firearms trafficking, environmental crimes, money laundering, corruption and illicit financial flows
  7. New tools and instruments for measuring crime, violence and justice in low and middle-income areas (Perception surveys, assessments of social networks, Big Data and others).
  8. Innovation in victimization studies
  9. Methodologies for measuring crime prevention at national and local levels
  10. Current debates about drugs
  11. Conceptualizing and measuring governance

What should the summary contain?

The summary should delineate the topic of the poster, including the objectives and hypothesis of the research project, the background and motivation for carrying out the investigation, as well as examples and results, which offer a better understanding of its technical merits. (500 words maximum)

What is the evaluation criteria?

The proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Quality, originality and innovation
  • Methodological rigour
  • Correlation with the topics of the Conference
  • Contribution to the development of statistics about crime and related topics, as well as public policies to prevent and reduce crime

Which are the important dates?

  • Deadline for poster registration: 7 April 2016
  • Notification of accepted posters: 29 April 2016
  • Submission of the final version of posters: 27 May 2016
  • Presentation of posters: 9 June 2016

Which is the layout for presenting the posters?

The selected posters should consider the following instructions:

  • Include a space for the title and name of the author
  • Incorporate a visual summary with information that attracts the attention of the spectators
  • Use a structure with sections
  • Use bullet points instead of paragraphs
  • Use a font size that is readable from a reasonable distance as well as clear graphs and diagrams
  • Present a non-published project which is still in development
  • Formulate questions to encourage the debate surrounding the theoretical work, methods, data and analysis of policies or findings about related topics.

Upon receipt of the notification of selection, the poster should be sent to the indicated address as a PDF file in its original language.

Posters will be displayed in horizontal or vertical position in the following dimensions: 32" x 40" (82cm x 102cm).

During the day of the presentation, the participation of at least one author of the work is required.
